Abstract
This workshop focuses on the critical role and active strategies for incorporating the patients’ perspectives into the management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to enhance treatment outcomes and the quality of life of patients. Highlighting the role of patient-centred care, this session underlines the importance of understanding and addressing the unique values, experiences, preferences, and needs of individuals living with SLE. Central to this approach is the concept of shared decision-making (SDM), where patients and healthcare providers collaborate on treatment decisions.
A clinical case will illustrate these principles. It involves a 26-year-old female with SLE, presenting with arthralgia and mild cytopenia. Initial treatment leads to improvement; however, she experiences a relapse due to a lack of therapeutic adherence. Later, there is a significant discrepancy between the patient‘s reports of persistent pain and fatigue, and the absence of objective markers of lupus disease activity as assessed by the physician. This case highlights the frequent discrepancies between patient and physician assessments of disease activity.
During this workshop, participants will explore the strategies for integrating patient-reported outcomes (PROs) into clinical practice, aiming to bridge these gaps and enhance the understanding of subjective disease aspects. The concepts of SDM, Type-2 symptoms, PROs, and disease activity assessment will be discussed extensively. Additionally, the workshop will emphasize effective communication strategies to support SDM, ensuring that therapeutic plans align with the patient‘s lifestyle and preferences, thereby improving adherence and health outcomes.
By prioritizing the patients’ voice and incorporating SDM, rheumatologists can achieve more holistic and effective lupus management, ultimately leading to improved patient satisfaction and better overall care.
