2018, Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Although they are structurally distinct, they both bind to immunophilins, which inhibit calcineurin, and thereby lead to T-cell suppression.59 Use of cyclosporine in systemic lupus erythematosus was first reported in 198160 at a high dosage of 10 mg/kg/d. All patients (n = 5) eventually stopped therapy because of side effects, including nephrotoxicity and angioedema. Since then, CNIs have been used safely at lower doses with close monitoring of trough levels and kidney function.
