    Some individuals may have increased susceptibility to chronic dermatophyte infection because of a more broad-based immune dysregulation. This includes patients with HIV infection, or those who are chronically immunosuppressed because of medications (chemotherapy or prednisone).35,37-39 Another important host factor is the integrity of the skin barrier, and patients with disorders of cornification are noted to have chronic dermatophyte infections.40
